Aldi Is Selling a Rosé Marinara Sauce

Basic Marinara Sauce

If you’ve visited enough homes of middle-aged women, you’re probably familiar with the phrase “I love cooking with wine… sometimes I even put it in the food!” It’s been inarguably THE funniest cooking joke of all time from the moment someone first thought to print it on an apron. Now, it’s also an accurate summation of supermarket chain Aldi’s business strategy.

Why? Because the same people who brought you an online wine class now sell jars of marinara sauce that come pre-infused with wine. That sound you hear is a stampede rushing out to buy some jars right now.

This revelation comes to us courtesy of Instagram account @AldisBuys, who spotted the “Specially Selected” jars of chianti and rosé-infused marinara sauces. The varietal isn’t the only difference, however. In terms of “traditional” ingredients, the chianti blend includes Italian tomatoes, basil and garlic alongside “full bodied chianti wine.” Conversely, the rosé (whose label notes the presence of a “natural wine flavor”) is made with Italian tomatoes and herbs.

Information about these sauces from Aldi’s website is scant, but TheKitchn says that each 16-ounce jar should retail for $2.99. There are no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives, but neither does there seem to be any alcohol, either. But in more hopeful news, the fact that the individual behind @AldisBuys is based in the US suggests that the international chain should be stocking these jars on our side of the Atlantic.

Regardless, these Specially Selected sauces sure seem like a way to put some pizazz in your pasta. I mean, why worry about choosing a bottle of wine to pair with dinner when it’s already on your plate? You really can’t go wrong.
