Celebrity chef dramatically drops cook-at-home Christmas roast price after outrage

The celebrity chef came under fire for charging £350, plus £30 delivery, for a three-course box of food, which fed between four and six people and included a traditional Roast Norfolk turkey with cranberry, chestnut and sage stuffing. Tom, 48, is charging £175 for a box this year. It serves 12 to 14 people, and delivery is included in the price. That includes a 6kg free-range whole bronze turkey with “plenty of juicy, rich meat”, as well as giblets, pigs in blankets, stuffing, bread sauce, gravy and cranberry sauce.

A 5kg whole turkey box costs £160, while a 4kg turkey and all the trimmings comes out at £145. He has teamed up with farm Copas, based in Cookham, Berks, to provide the turkeys for his festive boxes.

Tom’s website reads: “Copas free range turkeys are reared to full maturity, hand-plucked, and game hung for two weeks.

“You can taste the difference – tender, juicy meat that boasts a rich traditional flavour.

“Copas turkeys are wandering around outside well before most alternatives have even hatched!

Fully mature adult turkeys are three times the age of intensively produced birds in supermarkets.”

Tom is known for giving orders in his kitchens at his two-Michelin star pub, The Hand & Flowers, and The Coach in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, which has one Michelin star.

The slashed prices of his Christmas food sets comes after Tom was slammed online in September for charging £87 for sirloin steak at The Hand & Flowers.

Wine expert Guy Woodward tweeted: “Website of @handfmarlow by @ChefTomKerridge – ‘unpretentious’, ‘proper pub’, ‘for everyone to enjoy’ ‘relaxed and accessible’.

“Also @handfmarlow – steak and chips: £87; side of cabbage: £7.50; creme brûlée: £26.50. And people complain about wine mark-ups…” Tom hit back: “Those prices include everything , VAT and service…Also I pay staff properly and treat their job as a professional career. Perhaps the real cost of dining should be addressed. Unpretentious does not mean cheap. Also, why is profit a bad word?”

MasterChef regular Tom also owns Kerridge’s Fish & Chips in department store Harrods, where it costs £35 for market day fish with chips, curry sauce, tartare sauce and pease pudding.
