The Negroni is one of the punches cocktails around. Made with equal parts of gin, Campari and sweet vermouth, a proper Negroni is stirred – not shaken – and best served with ice and a slice of orange.
The dry and zingy cocktail was first mixed in Florence, Italy, in 1919, at Caffè Casoni.
It is believed Count Camillo Negroni concocted it by asking bartender Fosco Scarselli to strengthen his favourite cocktail, the Americano, by adding gin rather than soda water.
Scarselli also added an orange garnish to signify this was a different drink, as opposed to the lemon garnish usually served with the Americano.
But how do you make the classic drink? Express.co.uk has you covered with a simple recipe.

M&S has launched a new summer cocktail in a can and it’s just £2
How to make a negroni
What you’ll need
- 25ml gin
- 25ml sweet vermouth 25ml Campari
- ice
- slice of orange
Method
Pour the gin, vermouth and Campari into a mixing glass or jug with ice.
Stir well until the outside of the glass feels cold.
Strain into a tumbler and add 1 large ice sphere or some fresh ice, and garnish with an orange slice, using a blood orange when in season.
But what if you’re looking to mix it up a bit?
There are plenty of variations to the classic Negroni you can try.
The Negroni sbagliato is made in the same way as the Negroni, but you replace the gin with sparkling white wine, or Prosecco.
If you’re not a big fan of gin, substitute it for tequila. This is known as an “Agavoni” or “Tegroni”.
Or alternatively, if you’re a big gin fan, there’s a few other options you can try.
Why not swap out your regular London Dry gin for a fruity twist?
Alternatives include Malfy Gin Con Arancia, Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla or the unusual Jaffa Cake Gin.
Here’s a few other options:
- Boulevardier: A similar cocktail that uses whiskey in place of gin
- Old Pal: Uses dry vermouth and Canadian rye whisky.
- Americano: 1 oz Campari, 1 oz sweet red vermouth, a splash of soda
- White Negroni: Gin, Lillet blanc, and Suze
- Fergroni: Use Punt e Mes instead of vermouth
