Make mulled wine with foolproof five-ingredient recipe

Mulled wine is loved for its rich, spiced taste making it ideal for beating those chilly, dark evenings.

While many people buy this seasonal beverage ready to drink from the bottle, one TikTok star has claimed it’s no bother from scratch.

Sharing her recipe in a video on her page @partnerinwine, the alcohol expert said: “Mulled wine is surprisingly easy to make, so why do we always just buy the bottle?”

The base of the homemade drink comprises simple ingredients including red wine and gin, but it’s easy to customise.

And it takes less than one hour to brew from start to finish.

  • One large orange
  • One lemon
  • Brandy or gin

How to make mulled wine

Demonstrating her quick formula on TikTok @partnerinwine suggested using a relatively cheap bottle of red wine as the base.

She then poured it into a large casserole pot followed by a “couple of leftover lemons” and one orange.

These were cut in half and squeezed a little to release some of the juices into the wine, before placing the rest of the fruit in the pot.

The wine enthusiast then added a whole cinnamon stick, four whole-star anise and a generous dash of granulated white sugar to taste.

Nutmeg can also be added at this point, along with any other “Christmassy” spices.

To finish, the TikTok creator added a generous dash of gin, though she noted that mulled wine is traditionally made with brandy.

Once all the ingredients were in the pan, she put it on the hob over low heat and slowly brought it to a simmer.

According to the TikTok user, the heat should be turned down when the wine starts to steam as this will burn off the alcohol.

For the best mulled flavour, leave it on the hob for at least 20 minutes, then drain through a colander then return to the pan.

The wine is then ready to enjoy at home or on the go in a thermal container to keep it warm.‌
