Dr Michael Mosley shares the four snacks you should be eating and what to avoid

Dr Michael Mosley founded The Fast 800, a weight loss programme comprised of three approaches, The Very Fast 800, The New 5:2 and Way of Life – depending on your goals.

In all three methods, Dr Mosley suggests that slimmers enjoy a “moderately low-carb, Mediterranean-style diet”. Foods such as eggs, full-fat yoghurt, colourful veggies, dairy, and nuts are important.

According to the weight loss expert, dieters should be eating full meals as opposed to snacking throughout the day.

He explained: “Snacking spikes your insulin levels between meals and tends to increase hunger. Try to avoid snacks, especially on fasting days.”

However, if you are very peckish throughout the day, it’s fine to reach for certain foods. Dr Michael continued: “If required, have some non-starchy veg, a sliver of cheese or some berries. Alternatively, nuts are a great source of protein, fibre and micronutrients.”

The weight loss guru explained that nuts provide a good source of protein, minerals and vitamins, as well as healthy fats and high fibre.

If not taken as a snack, Dr Mosley advised that they could be enjoyed alongside meals or in a stew or salad.

He added: “Almond or coconut flour makes a good low-carb alternative to flour for baking – yes, you can bake healthy treats!”

Dieters who are reaching for nuts as a daytime snack, there are some that are best avoided. The expert advised slimmers “avoid salted or sweetened nuts, which can be moreish and easy to overeat”.

Another idea for a weight-loss-friendly snack might be plain, Greek-style full-fat yoghurt with some healthy berries.

Alternatively, smash some avocado – which is super filling and rich in healthy fats – on some wholemeal toast or crackers.

In all his weight loss approaches, Dr Mosley advises slimmers to stock up on high-quality proteins like oily fish, prawns, chicken, turkey or pork.

If you’re plant-based, opt for edamame beans, dairy, nuts and seeds. Eggs also provide a great source of protein and are super versatile.

Steer clear of ultra-processed meats like bacon and salami. If you do eat them, make sure you do so rarely and in small quantities.
