The keto diet involves eating high-fat, low-carbohydrate foods as well as a moderate amount of protein. The diet forces the body to burn fats through ketosis and has been proven to be highly effective for weight loss. 

When it comes to following the keto diet, preparation is key to ensure slimmers stay on plan.

Picking up snacks when you’re out and about can be pricey and it can be hard to know if a food is keto friendly or not.

One expert has shared perfect ketogenic snacks that dieters can take to eat while they’re on the go.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, nutritionist Rob Hobson on behalf of SlimFast Keto explained that cauliflower popcorn makes a great snack.

Cauliflower is one of the most versatile and popular low-carb vegetables.

It is often substituted for potatoes for those following the keto diet. 

Rob explained cauliflower popcorn can be made by frying it in a pan until golden brown and finished by adding some raisins, chilli flakes, pistachios and parsley.

Cauliflower popcorn is a great snack to have on the go as it is nutritious and ketogenic without being messy.

The nutritionist also recommended eating boiled eggs, seasoned with paprika or celery salt for extra taste.

One large egg contains less than one gram of carbs and about six grams of protein, making them an ideal food for a ketogenic lifestyle.

They are also super versatile and can be consumed in a variety of ways although boiled is perhaps one of the best ways for those on the go.

Olives as well as halloumi and cooked king prawns are also considered ketogenic. 

Rob added that Caesar salad bites make the perfect keto friendly snack.

They can be made by placing small baby leaves on a plate before sprinkling with chopped, canned anchovies and grated parmesan as well as a little dressing.

For those with a sweet tooth, keto smoothies can be made with nut milk, protein powder, almond butter as well as an approved sweetener like stevia. 

Smoothies with protein powder are also extremely filling.

The expert also shared how Britons can follow the diet without breaking the bank.

Nuts and seeds are great snacks when following the keto diet as they typically contain high levels of fat.

Rob added: “These foods make great Ito snacks or additions to dishes such as curries, salads, yoghurt pots or porridge. Nuts and seeds are expensive but there are cheaper ways of purchasing them.

“Rather than buying specific varieties of nuts and seeds, look for mixed packs as these are always cheaper.

“You can also keep an eye on stores such as Holland and Barrett or online as there are always deals on offer as long as you’re not fussy about which variety of nut is on offer.”

Another staple when following the keto diet, meat and poultry are considered ketogenic.

This is because they contain no carbs and are rich in vitamins and several important minerals.

The nutritionist explained: “I think the first thing to say here is that we often overeat meat. Even as part of a keto diet, you shouldn’t be overdosing on the meat part of your dish. 

“Excess protein on the keto diet can also push you out of ketosis as the body converts it to glucose. Stick to just a handful and fill your plate with other foods such as greens cooked in butter, olive or olive oil and find a nice sauce to accompany the meat part of your meal.”
