Limit ‘negative effects’ of rapid weight loss with ‘toning’ routine – expert

Rapid weight loss is impossible to achieve from exercise alone though it is possible by following a very low-calorie diet or using other remedies that accelerate the process.

Ozempic is just one medicine many people have adopted for weight loss purposes, despite being designed to treat diabetics.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved prescription injectable medication originally created to help people with type 2 diabetes, though it has since been approved in the UK.

While there is sufficient evidence of weight loss as a side effect of taking Ozempic, many users fail to acknowledge the visible impact of quickly shedding pounds.

Speaking exclusively to, Kunal Makwana, personal trainer and founder of KMAK Fitness explained that when massive weight loss takes place rapidly, as is often the case with Ozempic, this can result in significant skin sagging, particularly in the buttock region.

He said: “While Ozempic is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes and can aid in weight loss, it’s important to note that losing a significant amount of weight within a couple of months is generally not considered a healthy or sustainable approach.

“Rapid weight loss can have negative effects on your health and may result in muscle loss instead of fat loss.

“That said, if you are aiming to lose weight and tone up your bum simultaneously, there are several strategies you can incorporate into your routine.”

Kunal claimed that one of the easiest ways to avoid the phenomenon known as “Ozempic butt” is to focus on muscle maintenance through regular exercise.

The fitness expert recommended incorporating a combination of cardiovascular exercises, such as running, cycling, or swimming, with a varied programme of strength training.

This includes movements such as squats, lunges, hip thrusts, step-ups, deadlifts and glute bridges which Kunal claimed: “help to build and tone the muscles in your buttocks”.

Of course, with any healthy weight loss journey, a balanced diet is another key factor to consider, even when using Ozempic.

Lean protein sources, plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats should all be consumed to support goals and provide the body with necessary nutrients.

According to the fitness expert, these are crucial for muscle toning, though they will only be effective with the right training regime.

In addition to healthy foods, drinking plenty of water is another diet must-have for people who are actively losing weight. 

Kunal said: “Drinking enough water is important for overall health, including weight loss and muscle tone. Aim to drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day.

“Remember that both weight loss and muscle toning take time and consistency, so it’s important to set realistic goals and maintain a consistent routine to see long-term results.”

Surgical remedies are also available to treat loose, saggy skin after rapid weight loss, though many are invasive and expensive.

A Brazilian butt lift under ultrasound guidance, known as Echoguided Buttock Lipofilling (EBL) is the safest version of fat transfer to the buttocks, even for people with low body fat, according to Dr Antonios Mitsakos, a Harley Street, board-certified plastic surgeon.

He claimed that it creates natural results and, allows for quicker recovery than traditional BBL surgery. 

Dr Antonios added: “When the volume loss is more significant, a lower body lift is the other option. This involves removing the loose skin but also reforming the muscles so that the effect lasts longer. These surgical techniques can be complemented by non-surgical skin tightening using radio frequency, lasers or injectables.”
