Weight loss is something on the minds of many but reaching a healthy weight is not easy to achieve. Dr Michael Mosley has given diet plan advice for getting started.
With many different plans on the market, it is not always clear what one to follow.
Dr Mosley has detailed tips as the creator of The Fast 800, which is a version of intermittent fasting.
Those following intermittent fasting focus on the times of day they eat as well as the foods.
In order to stay motivated on a fitness journey, the health expert shared the importance of getting support.
Having friends and family on board can help make a weight loss transformation easier.
Dr Mosley told Express.co.uk: “There is a huge amount of research and evidence supporting the idea that if you want to lose weight, it is really, really important that you have the support of your friends, your family, or some other wider community.
“Everyone experiences ups and downs in life, and as long as you have support and someone you can turn to, then you’re much more likely to succeed.”
When embarking on a new fitness journey, Dr Mosley also commented on the best plans for sustainable results.
As well as intermittent fasting, he suggested following a Mediterranean diet.
This involves natural foods that are low in carbs and high in protein.
Foods on the plan include fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish or seafood at least twice a week.
Not only can the plan help dieters reach a healthy weight, it promotes overall health.
Dr Mosley continued: “Eating a low-carbohydrate Mediterranean diet rich in different coloured fruits and vegetables will give you the best chance of getting the wide variety of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients your body needs.
“The high fibre content is a great way to boost your microbiome – the trillions of microbes that live in your large intestine and which are so important for your health.”
When following the plan, Dr Mosley recommended including olive oil to reap health and fitness benefits.
“Olive oil, common within the Mediterranean diet, helps reduce gut inflammation,” he explained.
“Try it as a salad dressing or drizzled over some cooked vegetables for a double whammy and it makes all that veg, beans and lentils taste so much better.
“Prebiotic foods form the foundation of a psychobiotic diet – a vegetable and fibre-rich one that’s good for your brain, keeps your mood up and anxiety levels at bay.
“They act as the ‘fertilizer’ for the good bacteria and encourage them to proliferate and, in time, counter the effects of more harmful bacteria.
“Leeks, onions and garlic are all prebiotics. Fermented foods like kefir, miso paste, kombucha and sauerkraut all help strengthen the good bacteria in the gut, while fruit, vegetables and whole foods rich in fibre feed the gut microbiome and allow it to thrive.”
If following a weight loss diet plan, the expert highlighted the need for cutting back on processed foods.
“It’s also important to try and avoid (or at least cut down) on processed foods as these destroy the active healthy bacteria in the digestive system,” he added.
“Treat your microbiome with care; feed it well and it will look after you.”
Dr Mosley concluded: “The reason people get hungry is because they’ve eaten something that’s very high in sugar or carbs, so they get a massive rise in the blood sugar levels and then they crash and then they get hungry.
“I find that if you’re eating something which has plenty of fibre in it and plenty of nutrients, I really don’t get hungry hardly at all.”
