When exercising, eating the right foods is essential. It’s important to eat a balanced diet to have enough energy to carry you through the physical activity, and to also help your body recover afterward.
Two fitness experts spoke to Express.co.uk about which foods you should be adding to your diet alongside your fitness regime.
Abbie Watkins is a personal trainer from OriGym Centre of Excellence, based in London.
She firstly mentioned “the biggest mistake” that people make when first starting out on a new exercise regime, which is “restricting themselves in terms of diet”.
“Whilst you should create a calorie deficit if you want to lose weight, cutting back on food too much just isn’t sustainable and won’t give you the results you want long term,” Abbie said.
The personal trainer recommended eating the same amount as you did before your new exercise regime, but adding new foods to your diet.
“Rather than trying to eat as little as possible, the best approach is to cut down on your calories by around 15 percent and make some healthy substitutions,” she said.
“For example, snacking on veggie sticks such as carrots or celery and eating more low-sugar fruits is a great way to fuel your body whilst still creating a calorie deficit.”
Abbie added: “Berries are a great choice.”

As for meals, Abbie recommended eating foods high in protein.
“Ensuring that you eat plenty of fish, sweet potato, eggs, oats, and leafy greens is a great way to keep your energy levels high without steering away from a nutritious diet,” she said.
Abbie also advised eating before exercise as it is “generally seen as the best practice for fuelling your workout”.
She said: “Eating before [exercise] allows you to train harder and for longer, and ultimately improves your performance.”
Jo Gray, a nutritional therapist, sports psychologist, and founder of online health studio Feelnoo.com, gave her advice on what to eat after doing physical activity.
“If your goal is weight loss, then it’s about what you eat after exercising,” Jo said.
She explained that you can do exercise in the morning, without eating breakfast, since your body will still have enough energy from the food you have eaten the night before.
Jo said: “When you exercise ahead of eating your morning meal, your body uses existing fat reserves and burns this instead.”
Jo advised eating healthy fats such as spinach and avocado to refuel after exercise.
Spinach is also rich in iron and vitamin K, whereas avocado contains omega-3 fatty acids.
Additionally, Jo recommended hemp sees and pulses, which are “a great source of protein and fibre which keep your body fuelled for longer”.
“The secret weapon which I swear by is teff – a fine grain the size of a poppy seed which is rich in fibre and protein,” she added.
“Due to its slow digestion it fills you up for longer and helps with healthy weight maintenance.”
