Ben Smith, from Wrexham, North Wales, lost 10 stone a decade ago. After piling the pounds back on again, the Welshman lost weight for a second time a few years later. How did he manage to do it?
Thanks to his own weight loss journey, Ben now runs a weight loss app.
Entitled #itsfine, the app is packed with hundreds of healthy recipes with the ability for users to swap ingredients and eat the foods they love without feeling guilty.
It also allows users to track their own goals and get organised with a handy daily planner.
Interestingly, co-founder Ben partnered up with Peter André to create the app.
The TV personality said he joined Ben’s business “with the goal of rescuing people from fad diets”.
So, how did Ben lose weight in the first place?
Back in 2012, Ben weighed 21 stone before slimming down to 11 stone.
“But I’d put it back on again by 2014,” the 40-year-old told Express.co.uk.
He therefore lost weight again for the second time in 2017 and “kept it off for five years”.
Now, Ben weighs a healthy 11 stone, even though he said he is “all about maintaining health and not a number on a scale”.
Ben struggled with many issues which motivated him to lose weight, including “being pre-diabetic, serous gout, three slipped disks, high blood pressure, depression, and being very immobile”.
He went on to explain how he kick started his weight loss journey, focusing on both his diet and his exercise regime, saying: “In 2017 I decided to work on my mental health and eating disorder.
“I made a simple plan of sticking to portion control weekly not daily, and ate only the food I enjoyed without being restrictive.
“I started weights and battle ropes and, in the first two weeks, had to go to hospital due to an acute heart issue and damaged my hip so badly I needed a hip replacement.
“I tore the tendons in my shoulder and arm so couldn’t exercise, so all I did was a morning dog walk.”
Despite this, Ben managed to reach his ideal weight – with the help of a healthy meal plan.
He said he could – and still does – eat “anything and everything I wanted whilst being mindful of good nutrient dense foods”.
“A mixture of vegetarian foods, burgers, flapjacks, takeaways, meals out, refreshing pasta salads, fish, curries – just a completely balanced approach,” Ben explained.
He continued: “I have been totally reprogrammed and conditioned now, mentally, to be mindful of my calories over the course of a week for flexibility, and enjoy a wide variety of all foods for health and in line with what I enjoy.”
Now, Ben said he has “complete food freedom and a positive relationship with food”.
“I have sustained my results long term and my binge eating disorder has been completely cured, which I can honestly say has saved my life,” he added.
