Weight loss is often on many people’s minds as the summer months begin. Breakfast is a key place to start with slimming attempts – and getting the meal wrong could serve to derail diet attempts. Some foods which are often considered low in fat and sugar, are still, in fact, not the best weight loss option. There’s one classic breakfast option popular with Britons that dieters should think twice about.

Toast with margarine is an easy go-to breakfast and does not contain saturated fat or sugar.
However, there are in fact several reasons why this easy breakfast is not a good idea for those looking to shed the pounds.
Most bread contains refined flour which provides minimal nutrients and fibre, reported Healthline.
This means the high refined carbohydrates and low fibre levels can result in blood sugar levels spiking.
In turn, this could result in “rebound hunger,” said Heathline, which can see dieters eating more at their next meal.
However, if you want to stick with toast, Livestrong recommends going for whole wheat toast or even rye or spelt bread.
As for margarine, the spread is considered by many to be a much healthier option than butter which has more saturated fat due to being made from animal fat.
According to the Mayo Clinic: “Margarine is made from vegetable oils, so it contains unsaturated “good” fats — polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.
“These types of fats help reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol when substituted for saturated fat.”
However, some margarine, in fact, contains trans fats – the least healthy fat of all.
“Trans fat, like saturated fat, increases blood cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease,” said the Mayo Clinic.
“In addition, trans fat lowers high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or ‘good,’ cholesterol levels. So skip the stick and opt for soft or liquid margarine instead.”
If you do want to still include margarine in your meal, be sure to opt for a spread that doesn’t have trans fats and has the least amount of saturated fat, recommends the Mayo Clinic.
Cereal is another popular breakfast choice for Britons – but not all are created equal.
